A Functional Medicine Approach at Reno’s Boost Health

Fans of Boost here in Reno know it’s a wonderful place to go for specialized vitamin infusions and injections. Our nurse practitioner Leslie Mays has the experience and expertise for individualized treatments to benefit the needs of each and every patient. Now, we’re excited to announce that Leslie has added to her resume with her recent graduation from the Kresser Institute for Functional and Evolutionary Medicine. Here’s what that means for our patients.

Understanding Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a science-based, patient-focused approach to care with a goal of finding out why someone is ill or unwell. Human bodies are complex, highly-integrated systems and simply treating a symptom doesn’t address the underlying issue. Functional medicine seeks to identify root causes of an illness, along with triggers like inadequate nutrition, stress, environmental toxins, allergies, the microbiome, and genetics. From there, a functional medicine practitioner can customize a healthy living plan that addresses various parts of your life, from the physical to the mental and emotional.

Once Leslie has completed her national boards, she’ll be offering advanced functional medicine diagnostics and treatments to Boost Health in Reno. These include:

  • SIBO breath testing. This non-invasive test can help diagnose gastrointestinal conditions, including lactose intolerance and SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)/
  • Advanced GI mapping. These tests can measure gastrointestinal microbiota DNA to determine imbalances.
  • Functional blood work. This test helps detect inflammation markers in the body.
  • Hormonal metabolite testing. These tests assess hormone production to identify imbalances.

Pairing these diagnostic tests with her education in ancestral nutrition gives Leslie a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to individual patient care. At Boost Health here in Reno, out goal with every patient is to build a personalized plan that fits their unique needs, and we’re looking forward to doing so with an expanded approach to functional medicine.
